Saratoga Springs, a resort town located in the southernmost foothills of Upstate New York's Adirondack region, is the most expensive summer destination in the United States. A recent survey from CheapHotels.org has come to this determination.

The survey compared all U.S. destinations based on the cost to lodge overnight in each one. Specifically, it established for each destination the lowest price travelers can expect to spend to stay in its cheapest available double room. The survey used the average lodging cost of each destination during the month of August as its basis of comparison.

At an average nightly rate of $332 for its least expensive double room, Saratoga Springs leads the rankings. It bears pointing out that only centrally located hotels or inns rated at least 3 stars have been considered by the survey.

The runners-up, at only a few dollars less per night, are the small Massachusetts island of Nantucket, which is located 30 miles south of Cape Cod, and Montauk, the easternmost point of New York's Long Island.

The following table shows the 10 most expensive locales in the United States this late summer. The prices shown reflect the average rate for each destination's cheapest available double room for the time period spanning August 1–31, 2016.

  1. Saratoga Springs (NY) $332
  2. Nantucket (MA) $329
